The Proposal’s Ryan Reynolds: 9 Roles You Totally Forgot About

Thanks to Deadpool, Free Guy and his ongoing stint as the unlikely (but highly successful) owner of a football club, Ryan Reynolds has become a household name in England.

The Hollywood star’s career skyrocketed after his first appearance as everyone’s favorite Marvel anti-hero in 2016, but the actor was credited for 20 years before donning Deadpool’s iconic red and black suit.

From minor TV appearances to underrated comedies and less successful films (sorry, Ryan), here are nine star roles you forgot about…

Sabrina the Teenage Witch

Heartthrob Harvey (played by Nate Richert) was the darling of the ’90s – but in the TV movie Sabrina The Teenage Witch, Mellisa Joan Hart’s character had two love interests to choose from.

Boss made the 1996 film before deciding to make a full series and saw Harvey played by another actor (Tobias Mehler) while Ryan – complete with 90s curly shades – played his love rival, Seth.

Sabrina ultimately decided to dump him, leaving Harvey as the sole recipient of her affection in the series, but it was a different story backstage, as Melissa admitted that she really liked her co-star.

“(Ryan) was so sweet,” she said during an Australian TV interview in 2017. “I had a girlfriend at the time, but we fell in love and it was sweet, and he was adorable.

“He’s a very, very good guy. Maybe I’ll be a good boyfriend, and I don’t end up with another guy, so maybe I should take a chance.”

Sabrina TV Movies is not currently available to stream, rent or buy online in the UK.

Family man

After being name-checked several times on Seth MacFarlane’s cartoon comedy series, Ryan finally made a cameo appearance in a 2011 episode of Stewie Goes for a Drive. The episode saw Ryan move in next door to Griffin and develop a crush on Peter’s father.

Ryan also lent his voice to a 2011 episode of Jesus, Mary and Joseph!, in which he played an “overweight man”, according to IMDb, before making another brief appearance as himself in 2017.

The actor is good friends with Family Guy creator Seth and also appeared in his 2012 film Ted.

You can stream Family Guy on Disney+.

Blade: Trinity

Deadpool was far from Ryan’s first comic book adaptation and in 2004, he joined the cast of the third installment in the Blade franchise to play rogue vampire hunter Hannibal King.

Blade: Trinity sees human-vampire hybrid Wesley Snipes join Hannibal and his fellow hunters in an attempt to defeat rival Danica Talos (Parker Posey) once and for all.

Although the first film in the series proved very popular and the second film was seen as a proper continuation, the third film did not match their success and received a poor score of 24% on Rotten Tomatoes.

You can stream Blade: Trinity with an Amazon Prime subscription.

Amityville Horror remake

Immediately after completing Blade, Ryan flew to Wisconsin to begin shooting the remake of the 1979 horror film.

Ryan and Mulholland Drive star Melissa George star as George and Kathy Lutz, a couple who move into their dream home only to discover a mass murder occurred there a year earlier.

The couple and their children are soon plagued by paranormal activity and a number of frightening occurrences during production leave Ryan and his colleagues terrified.

Just days after filming, a body washed up in the lake where the set was built and the real-life Kathy Lutz also died during production.

Ryan also admitted that he found the filming location – which was an original 1800s house that had undergone minimal alterations – “terrifying and disappointing”, noting other strange coincidences.

He told MovieWeb: “A lot of the crew wakes up at 3:15 in the morning, that’s when all the cruelty in this house happens all the time. I think it’s an unconscious thing. You read the script and suddenly wake up at 3:15 in the morning.”

Unfortunately, Amityville Horror wasn’t a hit either – and Ryan hasn’t taken a starring role in a horror film since.

You can rent or buy Amityville Horror via Amazon Prime.

Ryan appeared in one episode of the hit 2003 medical comedy as Spence, an old friend of JD (Zach Braff) and Christopher Turk (Donald Raison), who encourages them to go out drinking instead of prioritizing their work at Sacred Heart.

At the time of filming, Ryan had an impressive number of TV credits but had yet to get his big break in the film world.

You can stream Scrubs as part of a Disney+ subscription or rent individual episodes through Amazon, Apple TV, and YouTube.

Green lantern

Ryan’s previous involvement in the superhero genre saw him play Hal Jordan, a test pilot given powers and a place in the intergalactic space force Green Lantern Corps – but the film wasn’t as popular as Deadpool.

Unfortunately, the film was widely panned upon its release in 2011 and poor box office returns meant that plans for a sequel were shelved by Warner Bros.

In a very Ryan Reynolds-like move, the actor often makes self-deprecating quips about the film and in Deadpool, his character asks for an environmentally unfriendly superhero costume.

Ryan wasted no time in offering advice to a fan who was considering renting the film:

Green Lantern is available to rent for $0.99 on Apple TV, it’s been 9 years… should I do it @VancityReynolds ?

But there was one upside: he met his future wife Blake Lively on the set of the film.

You can go against Ryan’s advice by streaming Green Lantern on Amazon Prime or renting it via Apple TV.

Ryan Reynolds in Fifteen

Yup, Ryan is Nickelodeon’s kid.

Hillside (or Fifteen, as its worldwide release was titled) was the only Canadian teen soap opera of the 1990s.

Ryan played Billy Simpson – who became a bully as a way to mask his emotions after family problems and romantic rejection – in a memorable 18 episodes.

The role gave Ryan his first on-screen credit, but he later revealed he “hated” the job.

“I hate it, I really do,” he said during an appearance on a US talk show. “I just did it to get out of the house.”

Ryan then worked in warehouses and restaurants before being persuaded to try acting again.

Fifteen cannot currently stream, rent or buy online in the UK.

Land of Adventure

Despite its top-rated cast, this coming-of-age comedy essentially went unnoticed after its release in 2009.

Set in the mid-’80s, Adventureland sees Jesse Einsenberg’s character from The Social Network fall in love with co-worker Em Lewin (Kristen Stewart) during a stint at an amusement park, but a love triangle develops between them and Mike Connell, played by Ryan.

Older than his co-workers, Mike was a married Adventureland employee who was having an affair with teenager Em, and Ryan previously admitted to feeling very sad because of the age difference (he was 32 and Kristen was 18) during filming.

He told Collider: “I’ve never felt so old, yeah. Daily. Lord. It was a routine of humility. That’s kind of cool. I like that aspect too.

“Obviously, this guy had a very inappropriate relationship with this very, very young girl, but the spirit on set really felt like I was eight or nine years ago. It’s a pretty cool place right now.”

Adventureland is currently available to stream on ITVX.

The 1995 comedy sees two clueless teenagers (Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams) embroiled in the Watergate scandal. Yes, it sounds strange.

In his brief appearance, Ryan played Chip, the son of White House Chief of Staff H.R. Halderman, and writing in 2019, Screen Rant noted how Dick was an early indication of Ryan’s scene-stealing abilities.

“Reynolds doesn’t have much screentime in Dick, but his nervous energy and difficulty finding words make Chip both delightfully awkward and slightly endearing,” they wrote.

Dick is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime.
