Sofía Vergara spent a lot of time in the make-up chair to transform into her role as a cocaine lord in Griselda – and she thinks any suggestion would be a huge disservice.
On Wednesday’s episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, Sofía was outraged when the host stated that the makeup and prosthetics she wore to portray notorious Colombian drug smuggler Griselda Blanco in her new Netflix miniseries looked subtle.
“I feel like they just turn your nose up or something,” Kelly told the Modern Family alum.
“You’re crazy?” replied Sofia who was surprised.
“It looks small. You know what I’m saying? Like, when you look at you, it’s invisible…” Kelly continued. But Sofia doesn’t like it.
“No, Kelly, it’s hours,” she says of the time she spends in the makeup chair.
Kelly stuttered, nervously trying to explain herself by admitting that her makeup “might take some time,” but “a little change really changes her being.”
It’s a wig! Sofía said jokingly before telling Kelly to “shut up” so she could explain all the changes made to her physical appearance for the character.
“That’s a lot! They did a lot to me! It’s a tooth. That’s a wig, that’s a nose. “It’s plastic (all over my face),” said the America’s Got Talent judge.
Kelly quickly changed her tone.
“But what am I saying,” he said. “They did a really good job making it look seamless.”
Clarkson continued: “You really look like a different actress, like playing the role. You can have a different life as this actress.”
Sofía seemed to appreciate the statement.
“That’s what I wanted – that reaction,” he replied. “I’m glad you thought it was just a little thing because it means it looks natural.”
Sofía then explained why she became a little sensitive about her performance in Griselda. He said he was “worried” people wouldn’t take him seriously in dramatic roles if he was too similar to himself or his comedic character on Modern Family.
“I thought, ‘Are they going to see Gloria Pritchett in Griselda?’” she said. I mean, have you seen it?
“I don’t see you in this character at all,” Kelly said.Undated Florida Department of Corrections booking photo of Griselda Blanco.
While Sofía’s character in Griselda doesn’t look much like the real-life queen Pin (above), it’s understandable why she would want to physically transform to play la madrina, or the Godmother, in her new Netflix series.
Blanco is accused of masterminding at least 40 murders from Miami to New York during his reign in the 1970s and early 80s. This included the murder of a 2-year-old boy in 1982, an act he was allegedly proud of, according to the Miami New Times.
Despite her cruel nature which ultimately earned her the nickname “The Black Widow”, she is also known for her ingenuity. He built a multibillion-dollar criminal organization with clever inventions, such as his line of underwear with secret compartments that hid drugs, allowing his traffickers to transport cocaine to the United States using commercial flights.
