Prue Leith Reacts To Sandi Toksvig’s Exit Claims

Prue Leith has responded to Sandi Toksvig’s recent claims about what led to her pulling out of the Great British Bake Off.

Both Prue and Sandi were new additions to the Bake Off family when the show switched to Channel 4 in 2017, and although Prue still remains a judge on the show, Sandi stepped down as presenter after three seasons.

Last month, the QI presenter made headlines when he claimed his time on Bake Off ended because he “stopped having fun”.

“I literally stood there watching the meringue dry and thought, ‘Oh my God, my brain has atrophied,’” he claimed.

During an interview on Times Radio on Tuesday, Prue was asked what she thought about Sandi’s comments, which she admitted didn’t match her memories of working with the comedian.

“I don’t think Sandi is bored,” said Prue. “He and I shared this beautiful green room in this luxurious house, where we filmed Bake Off, which was in the library.

“So we had a nice selection of books, and she would (crochet) little pictures. So he made a lot of it. He wrote several scripts. He did a lot of other things.”

Prue added: “I mean, I can see that for some people as smart as Sandy, watching dry meringues might be a bit tough, but I think she just loved the joke. I don’t think he’s that bored.”

Sandi previously told Radio Times: “After three years, I thought, ‘That’s enough, go and do something else!’ for me. I’m going to move on and do something else’.”

In 2020, long-time Bake Off judge Paul Hollywood claimed he was “shocked” and “very upset” by Sandi’s exit.

“I really love Sandi. He was never too busy to sit down, chat, and do things right. We shared a few drinks and had a great time together,” he said at the time.

Sandi was replaced by Matt Lucas, who provided vocals for three seasons before announcing that he too would be leaving. Daytime favorite Alison Hammond then made her Bake Off directorial debut last year, and will return in 2024.
