In an unforgettable moment, Chloe Kelly whipped off her shirt to run across the pitch in her white Nike sports bra after scoring the winning goal in the Euro 2022 final on Sunday.

And it’s now been revealed that members of the England squad were given personalised bra prescriptions by breast biomechanics experts ahead of the tournament, according to The Guardian.

Research from the experts reportedly suggests that well-fitting, comfortable bras that offer the right support could improve athletic performance and help players train for longer.

Professor Joanna Wakefield-Scurr of the University of Portsmouth, who led the project, said: ‘Evidence suggests that sports bras have performance benefits, comfort benefits and health benefits, so I would say they’re just as important for exercising females as trainers.’

Sports bras usually fit one of two option – from compression garments, which limit breast movement by pushing them flat against the chest, to encapsulation bras, which offer individual cups for each breast.

Wakefield-Scurr revealed Kelly was wearing a crop-top style compression sports bra, which has structured support within it.

Such support is important, said the expert, since previous research has suggested that wearing bras that don’t fit right can result in several issues, including breast pain, sagging tissue and even shorten women’s running strides by up to 4cm.

‘Some of our research has also shown reductions in muscle activity in the upper body as a result of wearing a well-fitting bra, which means you could potentially go for a bit longer in your training session before getting fatigued,’ said Wakefield-Scurr.

Ahead of the Euros, Wakefield-Scurr and her colleagues offered general breast and bra information to the Lionesses, before providing individual meetings.

She explained: ‘We looked at their bra needs and any issues they’d been experiencing with their sports bras, and then we prescribed sports bras for them – including the sports bra that we saw Chloe displaying to everybody.

The substitute, 24, whirled her shirt around her head in a moment of glorious abandon, as she raced away pursued by ecstatic team-mates

Kelly stripping down to her sports bra and rushing across the pitch drew comparisons with Brandi Chastain’s famous celebration in 1999

‘They were off-the-shelf bras, but we found that the players really appreciated information on how to fit them, what styles would work for them best.’

Before the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics in 2021, 112 British athletes were given similar prescriptions by Wakefield-Scurr and her colleagues, in collaboration with the English Institute of Sport (EIS).

Prior to their discussions with the athletes, most the sport stars wore loose bras which were the wrong size and had limited support  – while several noted breast aches and pains.

Just a month after receiving their prescription bras, 87 per cent of the athletes said they had benefited from them, while 17 per cent said it had improved their athletic performance.

Chloe’s decision to whip off her shirt to run across the pitch in her sports bra was hailed by fans as the ‘feminist image of the decade’.

Many football fans went wild for the moment online, with some saying it would ‘go down in history forever’

It drew comparisons with former USA international Chastain, who shot to fame in 1999 after she celebrated scoring her country’s winning penalty in the World Cup final by ripping off her shirt, waving it around her head and dropping to her knees.

It was a turning point for women’s football in the country, with funding increased in the sport following the win.

Many fans went wild over the moment online, with one commenting: ‘Chloe Kelly celebrating her goal in a sports bra is the feminist image of the decade.’

Another wrote: ‘Chloe Kelly giving us the supportive sports bra representation we NEED!’ A third added: ‘Didn’t know who Chloe Kelly was an hour ago but she’s now my favourite. Her sports bra will go down in history forever.’

A fourth wrote: ‘Throwing out all my underwire bras and replacing them with sports bras out of respect for Chloe Kelly.’
