Leo Woodall and Ambika Mod One Day Reflect on Their First Meeting

One Day actor Leo Woodall reflects on his first meeting with co-star Ambika Mod.

The White Lotus alum plays Dexter in Netflix’s new hit miniseries, while former This Is Going To Hurt star Ambika plays his on-screen friend and love interest, Emma.

So far, the show has been a huge success for Netflix, with critics praising the two lead actors’ on-screen chemistry.

The pair underwent several “chemistry reads” during the audition process, with Leo admitting he was interested in acting alongside Ambika when they first met – although their initial conversation didn’t start well.

“He was talking to other Dexter hopefuls, and I thought, ‘Oh my God, how do I get in here?’” he told ABC News.

“I said, ‘Oh, nice shoes’. And it was like, not in the middle of a scene, but when we were supposed to be working and everything fell through.”

Luckily, he didn’t remember it that way.

“I met Leo at a chemistry reading and he was the second ‘Dexter’ I read. He’s very mischievous and charming,” he said on the Reign podcast.

“He was so open and warm in an instant and it felt so easy, the scenes felt so funny and I think that’s very rare.”

He continued: “That’s really half the battle because I think if the choice had been wrong, it would have been a lot harder. You can’t fake that and I’m so grateful to have an actor like Leo.”

Aside from this initial “chemistry read,” the pair didn’t have much time to work on their relationship before filming began.

“We met for a gin and tonic before starting pre-production, we met at Southbank to just chat. But that’s about it,” Leo told Talk News Uk before the show started streaming.

Elaborating on it to Variety, he added: “We met for coffee, which then turned into a gin and tonic around lunch time, the day before we went into pre-production, just to chat.”

“You don’t have time,” adds Ambika during our interview. “I just finished a job, (Leo) just finished a job, we went straight into practice, so you just have to (build that chemistry) in real time.”

Ahead of One Day, Leo also talks about the shocking reality of shooting the show’s dramatic finale, while Ambika shares how the reaction to Anne Hathaway’s accent in the original film adaptation of the story influenced her in the filmmaking process.

One Day is now streaming on Netflix.
