Disney’s Moana 2 Gets November 2024 Release Date

One day, a new Disney sequel was announced…

On Wednesday night, the Walt Disney Company announced another modern classic will be getting a sequel, with Moana 2 confirmed to hit theaters later this year.

The news was accompanied by a minute-long teaser, in which the main character is seen blowing a conch, as well as a first look photo from the film, which shows him exploring the ocean further.

According to Disney CEO Bob Iger, the Moana sequel was originally intended to be a TV series, but “we were so impressed with what we saw” that it was turned into a feature-length film instead.

“(We) knew this film was worthy of theatrical release,” Iger added (via The Guardian ).

Moana was a huge success for Disney upon its release in 2016, picking up Best Animated Film at the following year’s Oscars, as well as a nomination in the Best Original Song category (although it lost out that night to La La Land’s City Of Stars ).

The film was also a hit on the Disney+ streaming service, and looks to be the most streamed film of 2023, six years after its cinematic release.

The film features voice performances by Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the main characters Moana and Maui.

A live-action remake was also confirmed to be in development last year, with both stars producing and The Rock expected to reprise his role as Maui.

Moana 2 joins a list of Disney sequels in development, including Toy Story 5, Zooptopia 2 and two sequels to the hit film Frozen.

The sequel to Pixar’s Inside Out will also hit theaters later this year.

Last year, Bob Iger told Disney employees that the company would “lean more heavily into our unmatched brands and franchises” in the near future.

Disney’s latest animated offering, Wish, debuted towards the end of last year, to middling reviews and box office performance.
