Drew Barrymore is back on the dating scene, with some advice from Austin Butler.
The talk show host revealed Wednesday on The Drew Barrymore Show that she was going on her first date “in a long time,” and Callum Turner — who appeared with Butler to promote their new Apple TV+ series Masters of the Air — said he is “excited” for him.
“No,” Barrymore joked. “I’m afraid of these things because, well, they’re weird!”
Barrymore said she happily accepted the invitation after the “guy” offered to pick her up for a “long dinner,” but her single friend suggested she drink instead of eat. Barrymore laments her potential mistake, but Butler instead comforts her.
“I love the dinner,” he said. “Then you know it doesn’t work. You can really talk.”
Barrymore asked what to do if there was a “strange vibration at the door,” but Turner suggested she go to the restroom to arrange a “surprise call” with a friend before returning to her desk. As a true gentleman, Butler once again offered to help.
“I’ll be your friend,” he told Barrymore, adding, “Yeah, just send me a text and I’ll call.”
Although their chat contained lots of laughs and seemed somewhat relaxed, Barrymore admitted that she was serious about these fears and had been “really nervous” about going on a date. The former child star has of course been more than candid on her show about those struggles before.Barrymore previously shared that she hasn’t had sex since her 2016 divorce from Will Kopelman.

The Never Been Kissed (1998) star previously criticized online dating and sympathized with Chelsea Handler. She once cried on her show about dating as a single mother and said in 2022 that she had not had sex since her 2016 divorce from Will Kopelman.
Barrymore was previously married to Jeremy Thomas and Tom Green and shares two daughters with Kopelman. It’s still unclear whether her newfound courage to resume dating was inspired by psychedelics, although Barrymore is certainly thinking about the benefits in 2023.
“I was curious to know why I wasn’t open to a relationship,” she told New York Magazine at the time. “I really think there are serious problems buried. And I don’t know if I need to try MDMA or psilocybin treatment as a way to… see things in a different way.”
Whether the date goes well remains to be seen — only Butler’s inbox is proof of that.
