Amid all the talk about Netflix’s new One Day retelling, many of us are probably reminiscing about the 2011 film adaptation of the much-loved book.
While the new TV series received mostly good reviews, the 2011 film was a little more divisive, thanks in large part to Anne Hathaway’s attempt to speak with a Leeds accent.
And in case you were wondering – yes, that means Ambika Mod, who plays Emma in this new version of the story, “really” felt the pressure as she prepared for the role.Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess in their version of One Day
Speaking to Talk News Uk ahead of the show’s launch, Ambika admitted that she had previously “never” managed to perfect the Northern accent required for the character.
“If you look at my audition tape, I couldn’t do a Yorkshire accent,” he said. “I can not do it.”
For those who have watched One Day, you’ll know that Ambika finally made it, and she praised “amazing” dialect coach Natalie Grady.
“We’re militant – we meet, like, three times a week, hour-and-a-half sessions, we discuss every sound,” he said.
“I studied a very, very strong, authentic Leeds accent, then we stripped it down and found an accent that felt very honest to Emma and where she was in episode one, and then we toned it down from there.
“But yes, it definitely takes a village. I definitely didn’t do it alone. But I’m really happy that people think it’s OK.”Ambika Mod at an event last month

Ambika also said that after she played Emma, she made the decision not to re-watch the film version of One Day, fearing “it would disappoint me”.
“Me too,” agreed co-star Leo Woodall. “I watched it before the first audition, because I hadn’t read the book. But that’s all.”
Before One Day started streaming, Ambika was best known for her appearance in the BBC medical comedy drama This Is Going To Hurt, as well as her roles in I Hate Suzie and Trying.
Leo also had a key role in the recent series The White Lotus, which earned him and his co-stars a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Performance By An Ensemble In A TV Drama.
One Day is now streaming on Netflix.
